We already know that London is full of unusual and distinctive properties, but our attention was recently caught by a particularly interesting news story – a former public toilet which has been placed on the market with an asking price of £1 million. If it sells, it will become the most expensive public toilet in Britain, smashing the previous record of £115,000 which was fetched by a block in Cornwall’s Charlestown in 2015.
The small property offers 600 square feet of space, as well as a 435 square foot outdoor seating area. This makes it slightly larger than the average newly built one-bedroom flat. Besides its previous incarnation as a public toilet, it was also an exclusive nightclub named Public Life for several years until the license was revoked in 2012. It is currently being used as a Lebanese falafel restaurant.
One of the biggest selling points of the former toilet is its highly desirable location. It’s situated on East London’s Commercial Street in the fashionable Shoreditch area, just in front of Hawksmoor Church. It is opposite the famous Spitalfields market and a short walk away from Liverpool Street, Shoreditch and Aldgate stations. It’s currently licensed as a retail space, and is being marketed as the perfect spot to set up a bar, shop or restaurant. In such a prime spot it seems any business located here will have a great chance of success.
Whoever purchases this property will certainly be investing in one of London’s most unique buildings with plenty of potential, and we will be following this story with interest to see what happens.
