At the end of November plans for the largest housing development designed for Camden Town in the last thirty years were approved by the local council. The project will create 573 new homes in a fantastic central location. These homes are expected to be very popular due to the area and the amount of wonderful amenities on the doorstep.

The site selected is the former Camden Goods Yard. It has a wonderful history, charting improvements in the transport infrastructure and commercial activities. Notably the site is home to some well preserved railway and canal structures from the 19th century. The new development will be a mid-rise so it is hoped that it won’t overshadow iconic heritage buildings in the area, including the Roundhouse.

The aspect of the project that really stands out is that of the 573 new homes 184 (39%) will be affordable. In fact these properties will be specifically earmarked for first time buyers and tenants who struggle with the high prices in the Borough. This could be fantastic for the area.

Camden Town is renowned for its iconic nightlife and leisure attractions. For example it is home to some of the most incredible shopping areas in the whole of London, including the Stables and Camden Market. In addition there are restaurants with cuisine from all around the world and a multitude of bars.

The new development will add to these attractions by creating cafes, shops and restaurants in formerly disused railway arches. These could attract businesses looking to set up in the area. There will also be a new park in this area.

An interesting thing about the main building is the idea to put a chilli farm on the roof. This would become the largest urban farm in the UK, able to produce as many as 5,000kg of peppers per year. Residents would even be able to do some of their own gardening.
