Wimbledon Stadium redevelopment can get underway

Plans to redevelop Wimbledon Stadium have been in the works for over five years. The idea was to demolish the existing dog track and use the land for new housing, retail and leisure space. The proposals gained some intense opposition, resulting in some big delays. In February the project finally got consent and the redevelopment can get underway.

A complete transformation

The site itself is an impressive 500,000 square feet. The project will create 600 new homes as well as the aforementioned retail and leisure space. Half the site will become a new stadium for AFC Wimbledon, allowing the football team to return to their spiritual home. This was a huge reason why the project finally got the backing it needed.

An impressive 30% of the new homes will be affordable. This exceeded the number required by Merton Council to achieve planning permission. The properties are to be built by Galliard Homes. Housing association Catalyst will purchase the affordable homes and a portion of the private sale units.

Planning hurdles

This project has seen one of the longest running planning sagas in recent memory. The successful conclusion and start of the construction could refresh the area. After-all there were issues with the continued use of the dog track because of lack of business. The redevelopment will create much needed homes, new amenities, and also create jobs in the area.
