Imperial College London invested in the 23 acre White City site in 2009. Since then they have been in the process of redeveloping it. The north part of the site has been under construction since 2012. The Molecular Sciences Research Hub will be complete later in 2018. Afterwards it will become the home of the Department of Chemistry.
Work has not yet begun on the southern site but plans have been drawn up and public consultations were recently concluded. The masterplan for the area was revealed at the start of February and has now been submitted to Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
New homes and amenities
The plans for the south part of White City are very interesting. Two new high rise residential blocks will be built, rising 17 and 32 storeys respectively. The taller of the two has already successfully achieved planning permission. In total there will be 370 new homes within the properties. Incredibly the plans call for a portion of them to be offered to key workers at Imperial at below market rates.
Alongside the homes there will be new commercial spaces. In total the plans call for 13,500 square metres of new retail, leisure and food outlets. A 9,000 square metre hotel is also planned. The 150 room property will be perfectly located for visitors. The two sides of the site will be joined with a footbridge over the train lines, making it easier for people to make their way around.
The project will transform this part of the Borough, attracting a new audience of people. The new homes could provide an interesting value premium, particularly because of their close proximity to the new amenities.
