Refurbishing a North Kensington landmark

Trellick Tower is one of the most iconic buildings in North Kensington, home to 217 flats. The property was designed by Erno Goldfinger, a Hungarian architect and key member of the Modernist movement. It was finished in 1972, a time when taller tower blocks had dipped in popularity. Surprisingly it became a beloved design and earned Grade II* listed status in 1998.

In 2015 a framework agreement was created that would see the property refurbished internally and externally. Towards the end of May the project got underway, becoming the first major external work conducted on the tower in a decade. Over the next 14 months work will be done to repair windows and sliding doors, enhancing and preserving the exterior. The total cost for the work is £7.2 million.

The bill for the project is being paid by Kensington and Chelsea Council. They have owned Trellick Tower since shortly after its completion and have worked over the years to help maintain it. Originally the homes in the property were for social housing but the introduction of “Right to Buy” saw a number of them transfer to private ownership. The majority remain social housing though.

The work on the tower block is being carried out by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) and Wates Living Space. Both parties are working hard to keep tenants informed and ensure they are supported throughout the project.

Ultimately the works will help to preserve the iconic listed building. The timing of the external refurbishment getting underway is great, particularly with the fact that a flat on the 27th floor caught fire on the 19th of April this year. A disaster was averted but some damage was done. The works will repair it.

At Finefair we always keep an eye on projects that involve iconic properties in London. The works can have a great impact on the local area, driving interest and other investments. We are proud to work with numerous investors, offering options such as council leasing in Kensington and Chelsea. Our established relationship with the local authority means we can provide great advice to people interested in this kind of option.
