Thamesmead is one of the biggest developments in London, seeing over £1 billion invested to create new homes, infrastructure and amenities. These come in the form of a landmark institute that would become a world leading campus for construction, design, and engineering.

The Place and Making Institute could be created via a partnership between the local council, London South East Colleges, Peabody housing group, and other skilled providers. A site in nearby Abbey Wood has been suggested for the development. It would place it close to Harris Garrard Academy and the local station.

The aim of the institute would be to provide world leading training, research, and innovation that would help to improve standards in construction and place-making. This is very important for London as there is so much pressure to create new homes, space for businesses, and incorporate essential amenities in too.

The plan for the new education provider is ambitious. It would include a number of universities, an FE college, and an academy for students between 16 and 19. All of this would be supported by specialist training providers to ensure that the skills students gain would be outstanding.

The project could bring even more regeneration to Bexley, particularly attracting families with children who are planning a career in construction, design, or engineering. It will be interesting to see how the plans move forward and if a formal deal is agreed.
