Willesden Green in the London Borough of Brent has a very interesting history. Evidence supports the face that the site was popular for pilgrimage, indicating that the practice dated back beyond the 15th century. A church has stood on the site of St. Mary’s since 938, back when the area was a tiny village surrounded by woodland.
People stopped making the journey in the 16th century when the Reformation stripped many churches of their religious symbols. This included the destruction of St. Mary’s original Black Madonna. Fortunately pilgrimages returned, a new carving was installed in 1972, and the church is a popular spot once again.
Incredibly Willesden Green saw immense growth in the 1890s thanks to immigration from Ireland. As a result the area became the fastest growing district in the whole of London at the time. By the 1950s around 20% of all residents in the area were Irish.
Today people are still drawn to living in the area because of the community feel, large houses, and good transport links. The local Tube station is on the Jubilee Line. This means that travellers can reach Canary Wharf in around half an hour and London Bridge in 25 minutes.
The lifestyle residents can enjoy makes people want to stay in the area. A big selling point is the great local shops. There are plenty of options to choose from, including long established butchers and bakers. Independent restaurants, bars, and a new cafe culture add even more attractions.
Although the area itself is rather built up there are good open spaces within touching distance. Gladstone Park is the largest and includes some really great facilities such as a children’s play area and sporting pitches. The park is also home to a Holocaust memorial.
