New plans for eyesore site next to Camden Roundhouse

One of the saddest things about urban areas around the world is eyesore buildings. Sadly some properties fall out of use and can struggle to ever get new tenants. In time it can result in derelict buildings that are a blight on the landscape and neighbourhood. Luckily, sometimes some of them make way for new developments. We want to have a look at proposals that could do this for a site next to the iconic Roundhouse. Then, if you need any help with block management in Camden or other parts of London, we can handle it.

A historical gem

Block management CamdenThe Roundhouse in Camden is one of the most famous venues in the area. The Grade II Listed building was originally a railway engine shed built in 1846/47, housing a turntable. However, in 1964 it became an arts venue. Over the years it has been host to performances from some of the most famous bands of all times, stage shows, awards ceremonies and more. It has also made numerous appearances in films and music videos.

The Roundhouse is important from an architectural standpoint. It is a notable piece of 19th century railway architecture. In 2010 it was also declared to be a National Heritage site.

An eyesore

Unfortunately, there is an old office building next to the Roundhouse at 100/100a Chalk Farm Road. It has been vacant for a number of years, deteriorating due to the lack of use. Developer Regal London bought it in 2022 with an eye to create an innovative development on the site. These plans have now been revealed and are ready for consideration for planning permission.

The developer wants to demolish the existing office building and create four circular blocks in its place. If you need block management in Camden, we are the top provider. These new buildings will range in height from 6 to 12 storeys. It will create 265 rooms for students plus 24 affordable homes.

In addition, there will be 9,000 sq/ft of commercial space on the ground floor. Finally, the project will enhance the public realm along Chalk Farm Road, making the footpaths wider for pedestrians and Roundhouse patrons.

The designs for the proposed development are noteworthy because they look to celebrate the history and culture of the area. Most importantly, they draw inspiration from the industrial character of this part of London. While the developer accepts there will be some impact on the Roundhouse, the goal is to celebrate it. Plus, the new development will be vastly less harmful than leaving the current eyesore office building as is.

It will be interesting to see whether the project gets planning permission from Camden Council. There is plenty to appreciate about it. Public consultation has also shown that stakeholders want to enhance the area, especially the public realm.
