At Finefair Ltd we keep an eye on new developments all across London. They can offer opportunities for investors, including our current clients. Some can also turn areas into hotspots. We want to look at new proposals for Woolwich today. They could bring more students to the area and create some fantastic amenities. Then, if you need help with block management in Greenwich, you can speak to us.
An impressive area
Historically, Woolwich was an important area for maritime, military, and industrial activity. It was home to a massive dockyard which was responsible for building many notable ships. Later, the Royal Arsenal became a significant factor in British history. However, there was decline in the 20th century.
The decline of Woolwich is not the end of the story though. The closure of industries actually brought opportunities. It is now one of the most impressive regeneration spots in London. Most notable here is the transformation of the Royal Arsenal. The work is delivering thousands of homes, parks, shops, pubs and restaurants, and much more. There is a new DLR station too.
Elsewhere in Woolwich there have been several other redevelopments. This includes work to refurbish numerous buildings. There have been demolitions to create new apartments, conversions to create housing, and more. There is also a new Crossrail Station.
New plans
The latest plans are from MDPL Group. They want to transform two existing properties on Beresford Street. Let’s have a closer look, then you can ask us if you need guaranteed rent in Greenwich.
Currently, the site has two 1960s office buildings with a two storey structure linking them. However, the plans say they are in poor condition. The plan is to redevelop and build up the properties.
One building would become a 17 storey block of student housing with 332 rooms. The plan is for 50% of them to be affordable. There would also be modern amenities such as a cafe and gym.
The other property will be a 7 storey hotel with 265 rooms. In addition, there would be a restaurant, bar, and lounge, plus space for a shop. It would create over 100 new jobs.
Interestingly, the plans would demolish the two storey link between the buildings. The space would then become public realm. This ensures easier connectivity with Woolwich town centre. As a result, it’d be beneficial for locals, students, and hotel guests.
Next steps
The project has been in the pipeline for a little while now. There has already been engagement meetings and a public consultation. It will now be up to Greenwich Council to decide whether to give planning permission or not.
