At the end of June London Mayor Sadiq Khan revealed a new plan to celebrate the diverse culture in the capital. The new competition will award one of the 32 Boroughs the title of London Borough of Culture. It will then receive an additional £1 million plus of funding to help stage world class cultural events and programmes in the area.
London Boroughs have until 1st December 2017 to submit their bids for the competition, showcasing exactly how they will promote the culture in their area. Two winners will be selected in February 2018. The first will hold the title for that year and the second will take over in 2019. Both will receive the funding. On top of this, six other Boroughs with attractive projects will receive new funds.
Havering is expected to put a very good proposal forward. They already have a number of initiatives focused on celebrating culture in the area. Made Public, a Community Interest Company (CIC), has worked very hard since 2012 to improve the town centre in Romford. As a result is has become a culturally significant place to live, work, and relax too.
The Colour in Romford project stands out. It began with a competition for members of the public to submit their artwork with the opportunity to see it turned into public murals. The idea gained great support and four beautiful murals were created with the help of professional artists. The project is continuing with the aim to make Romford town centre one of the most beautiful painted areas in the capital.
The Retailery is another culturally significant project. The co-working space has plenty of cultural events for residents to take part in, including regular music nights.
A successful bid or a stand out project and the additional funding could have a big impact on the Borough. In fact it could help to stimulate the economy by attracting visitors, new residents, and investors.
