At the start of June an extension to the selective licensing scheme in Redbridge was approved. Consequently, it will come into force on 1st October 2018. Landlords in 12 additional wards in the Borough will have to adhere to the new requirements. Therefore, approximately 15,000 private rental properties will need to get a license.

The current scheme in place is Borough-wide additional licensing plus a selective license in Clementswood and Valentines. To expand it Redbridge Council had to get approval from the Secretary of State because the new coverage is more than 20% of the whole Borough.

What areas will fall under the new scheme?

The 12 wards that will soon be under selective licensing are: Goodmayes, Snaresbrook, Loxford, Newbury, Roding, Mayfield, Cranbrook, Fairlop, Church End, Seven Kings, Chadwell, and Aldborough. Landlords in these areas will need to get a license for rental properties if they fall under certain conditions. Most importantly they must ensure that each property is safe.

Why extend the scheme?

Redbridge Council chose to expand the licensing because of the number of request they received from local tenants had increased so much. Many of these tenants were having trouble getting their landlord to do essential repairs on properties. This left the homes in a less than satisfactory state.

Finefair is on hand to help any landlord that may have concerns about the new licensing. We can offer advice and adapt our services if necessary. Either way, our focus is on ensuring a consistent high quality service.
