Developing Acton and creating great potential

Acton has the potential to become one of the most popular areas in the London Borough of Ealing over the next few years. The area is already attracting people by offering more value for money than Queen’s Park and Notting Hill. New developments already underway and planned for the near future will provide even more opportunities.

The West London area has quite an interesting story. Its name means oak farm in Saxon, reflecting the large amount of woodland that was in the area. Much of this was cleared by the 12th century as development arrived. It was a popular summer retreat in the 17th century due to its close proximity to London.

Industrial activity came later. In the 19th century there were numerous soap factories and laundries located in the town. Advanced vehicle and parts manufacturing arrived the following century. Renault has a factory in the area from 1926 until 1960.

In the 21st century Acton is a largely residential area with plenty of potential. A major part of the redevelopment of the area is work on the largest council housing estate in West London. The South Acton Estate was built up over 30 years, creating 1,800 homes. The £600million regeneration will increase this number to 2,500. These new homes will offer a range of options, including social rent, market rent, shared ownership and private sale. The development promises 50% affordable homes.

In addition to this Crossrail is set to arrive in the area in 2019, reducing commuting time to Central London. In fact it will take under ten minutes for people to travel to Bond Street. This will be wonderful news for commuters.

The local area is also seeing the creation of more amenities. A redevelopment of the Oaks Shopping Centre could attract more businesses to the area, meaning people don’t need to travel if they want to shop.

Acton is a popular area for renting, appealing to young professionals and couples in particular. They can make their money go further in the area and then look at getting on the property ladder in the future. The staying power is great and helps to build up the community feel.
