Healthy Streets Funding

The Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) has given funding for 11 projects as a part of the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme. The purpose of the £50million investment is to help create Healthy Streets across London.

In November 2017 the funding was £33million, but this year it has increased to £53.4m. This money will help transform local neighbourhoods across London. Work includes new pedestrian crossings as well as cycling and walking infrastructure. This is in addition to revamping public spaces and adding pocket parks. The aim is to increase how attractive local streets are to support high streets and to improve air quality.

Beneficial Improvements

The South Chiswick investment is worth up to £2million. It will be used for various projects in the area. One such job is the addition of a pedestrian bridge underneath the Barnes railway bridge. This will fill the missing link of the Thames Path at Dukes Meadow. It will also work with the new cycle connections between the path and the pending Cycleway 9.

Another job in South Chiswick will be a redesign of the Grove Park piazza to improve it for pedestrians. Finally, there will be development of low-traffic neighbourhoods south of the A4 for residential areas.

Improvements across London

Other London boroughs awarded funding include Tower Hamlets, Newham, Southwark, Camden, and Croydon. The funding from 2017 and now have helped areas with their efforts to make places across London greener and safer.

The Liveable Neighbourhoods programme is an example of the Mayor’s investment to make Healthy Streets all over London. The record £2.3bn will work to increase how many people cycle, walk, and use public transport. The aim is for this increase to 80% by 2041. This will result in a drastic reduction in air pollution.

Research carried out by TfL showed how walking and cycling in local areas results in economic benefits. Improvements to infrastructure such as routes for cycling can result in up to a 30% increase in retail spending.
