Redbridge’s growing population and the impact on housing

The London Borough of Redbridge has one of the fastest rising populations in the whole of London. It was previously estimated that approximately 1,123 new homes needed to be built in each area of the capital every year to keep up with growth. In Redbridge though, this number was revised up to 2,132 as a result of the demand for homes.

To address the problem the Local Plan 2015-2030 was compiled. It was released in July 2016, seeing the culmination of work that began in 2011. The document set out plans to create over 16,000 homes by the end of the period to cater for the demand and provide much needed additional housing.

The Local Plan included plans to free up land in various parts of the Borough so that more homes could be built. Some aspects of the plans have been hotly contested, with a numbers of them being subsequently dropped or re-evaluated. This continues today as local people give their opinion on various parts of the plan.

Although the Redbridge Local Plan has divided opinion it has further highlighted the fact that homes are in desperate supply in this part of London. The reason for this is that it is one of the most affordable areas and enjoys an attractive location for one of the Outer Boroughs. There are also a number of highly regarded schools in the area, making it popular amongst families.
