One of the most eagerly anticipated redevelopments in west London took a step forward recently. The appointment of contractor JJ Rhatigan is great news for Twyford Abbey. It means the project by Latimer and Redington can continue, with the expectation work will begin this month. As a top provider of block management in Ealing, we want to take a closer look at what will happen to this interesting building, as well as the impressive site.
A Gothic manor
Twyford Abbey has a really impressive history. There has been a home on the site as far back as the late 13th century. However, the current property is a Gothic revival manor from the early 19th century. The design is by William Atkinson, the English architect with work including Abbotsford for Sir Walter Scott.
Sadly, the property has been allowed to deteriorate since 1988 when it was abandoned. It has been on the ‘Heritage at Risk’ Register for years. There have been a number of proposals since then, but none were successful. In fact, many could not get approval because the building and garden wall has had a Grade II listing since 1973.
One of the saddest things here is the fact Twyford Abbey and the grounds is a massive site. It has the potential to deliver new homes, public space, and more. Luckily, the current plans will finally allow the redevelopment.
What is happening?
The redevelopment will be fantastic for Twyford Abbey as well as the grounds. It will be really great for investors, buyers, and the local community. We’ll be happy to help any of the former who want to arrange block management in Ealing and other services.
Crucially, the project will involve work by Redington to revive the manor, turning it into 30 new homes. Work on the grounds will also create 296 homes in seven new residential buildings. The designs for Latimer are by AHMM Architects. According to the original plans, 50% of habitable rooms will be affordable.
The project will also restore the original gardens and Grade II wall. That will be fantastic for preserving the heritage of the site. It will create a community garden and orchard. Plus, there will be a new 1.2 acre public park. It will be the first time part of the grounds has been open to the public.
This inspiring project will create high quality homes, bringing life to a site that has been derelict for decades. It will save the beautiful manor house, something that many thought would be impossible. Additionally, there will be big benefits for sustainability and biodiversity.
As we said above, the plan is for work to begin this month. It will include clearing the site after such a long period of neglect. The goal is to then have the first homes ready for new residents by 2027.
