One thing a lot of people look at when they decide where to live is access to healthcare. It can be vital for some, whether it is families, retirees, or people with existing medical conditions they need to manage. They may want to live in close proximity to a GP or a hospital. It can mean there is more competition for homes and may push up prices too.

Delays for new hospitals

Investment properties SuttonIn 2020 the government said they were planning to build 40 new hospitals across the UK. The goal was to revitalise the NHS and ensure people would have access to high quality healthcare. However, there has been little movement on the new hospitals programme since then. It has sadly left a number of councils spinning their wheels.

Sutton is one area where a new hospital was planned. The site will be next to the Royal Marsden. The aim is to create a new A&E department and units for emergency surgery, maternity, paediatrics, critical care, and more. However, concrete plans are not yet in place.

Initially the Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust wanted the hospital to be open by 2025. However, they had to re-evaluate and said it will now be 2027 at the earliest. Even that may be a stretch though.

What is the issue?

The problem is that the government has not provided additional information about funding for the project. As a result, the trust has not been able to begin the planning process. Building a new hospital is a very complex process at the best of times. It is even trickier here because the site is in an existing residential area and next to a hospital.

Sadly the trust has had to pause pre-planning engagement until they have the information they need. They did not want to go too far into this until they have clarity. Doing so would have been risky and could have been a waste of time and money if the ideas were heading in the wrong direction.

The trust will now wait until they hear from the government. They will then go back to looking at crucial details such as the design, infrastructure, and access. This will lead to submitting a full planning application in the future. The hope is that they will be able to begin work in the next few months and go from there.
