New council housing for Wandsworth

Wandsworth Council is starting to do more to help ease demands for housing in the Borough. A major part of this will be the creation of new council homes. The properties will be targeted at residents currently living in overcrowded houses as well as those looking to downsize and free up larger family homes.

In total around 1,000 new homes are expected to be created at sites across the Borough. Of this total 605 or 60.5% will be council, made available for 35% of market rent. This will make them accessible to more people, particularly those who currently live and work in the area. In addition there will be properties for shared ownership where buyers can purchase a share in a home. Finally, there will be some homes available for sale.

Work is already underway on the first 210 homes at sites in major areas Tooting, Battersea and Putney. Of this number 61 are council housing. Construction on the remaining 790 houses will commence in the coming years.

The plans are fantastic and will help Wandsworth go a long way to meeting the tougher targets for building affordable homes in the area. Other councils could learn from the project and create more accessible council housing.

In addition to creating the housing the local authority is also overseeing projects to improve infrastructure and amenities in the areas. For example they will look to create new parks and open spaces whilst improving roads and pavements. The improvements in Wandsworth and the new developments could attract more people to staying in the area and even relocating to it.
