A new high rise proposed for Chelsea

In 2015 austerity cuts led the Met to take a look at their property portfolio to see if sales could raise funds. One of the properties sold was the police station in Chelsea located behind Sloane Avenue. The Met made £35million for the sale but the property was sold on to developers for £50million in 2016. A recent proposal shows a plan to replace it with 32 apartments.

According to the proposal, the new building will be ten storeys tall and will also feature some great facilities for residents, including a gym. In addition there is a plan to set up a “Dedicated Ward Officers Station”. This will preserve the history of policing on the site and provide a place to store equipment.

Notoriety

As you would expect police stations across the UK have their fair share of infamous stories. The police station in Chelsea is most notorious because of the arrest of John Haigh in 1949. The English serial killer became known as the Acid Bath Murderer. He was questioned at the station and was charged after confessing.

Decision

The proposal will go before Kensington and Chelsea and a decision could be made by autumn. The developer may need to make some changes to the plans to get permission, including providing more facilities for the community.

The new apartments could become very popular. The location is impressive, occupying a prime site between Fulham and King’s Roads. There are plenty of amenities nearby, including plenty of shops as well as restaurants. There are two Underground Stations; Sloane Square and South Kensington. As a result locals can get on the Circle, District or Piccadilly Lines.
