More towers in the works for Greenwich Peninsula

At one point in time Greenwich Peninsula was a thriving industrial area. It was home to a gasworks, a power station, docks, and numerous manufacturers. Sadly, it became a massive Brownfield site towards the end of the 20th century. Since then it’s been a key location for regeneration, including creating new homes in riverside neighbourhoods, amenities, and more. More and more towers are popping up, creating new homes, housing and more. We want to have a look at some new proposals here, then you can rely on us if you want help with block management in Greenwich, guaranteed rent, and more.

Plans

Block management GreenwichAs we said, the Peninsula was previously home to a massive gasworks. The East Greenwich Gasworks was the largest in the world in the 1960s, but production came to an end in 1976. The last major evidence of the history, the final round gasholder, has been deconstructed. Owner SGN now wants to redevelop the land to create housing in three new towers.

The proposals for the site are quite interesting. According to the planning application, they want to create towers rising 29, 25, and 15 storeys respectively. These new buildings will provide a mix of student accommodation (834 beds), co living (420 beds), and 72 affordable one to three bed homes.

One of the most notable things about the plans is they respect the history of the site. The three towers are arranged around a new circular park. The designs celebrate the former gasholder on the site. Even better, the plan is to retain the last ring beam from it as part of the new public space. The plan is for this to be a vibrant new mixed use neighbourhood. It will be home to students, young professionals, and families. Critically, the buildings will feature different amenities for residents. For example, the student tower will include a gym and cinema while the co-living block will have flexible workspace. Plus, there will be fantastic spaces on the ground floors, including a cafe and shop.

What will happen next?

SGN has submitted their planning application to Greenwich Council. It will be up to them to decide whether to give permission or refuse it. They may even require some alterations to the plans.

There is cause for optimism here though. Plans for several towers nearby got approval earlier in the year. Dozens more are also in the pipeline. Critically, Greenwich Council is committed to supporting Brownfield developments, especially when they create new homes. The next ten years could see thousands more people living on Greenwich Peninsula.
