Feel the community spirit in Roundshaw

Many locations have a reputation for being rough or even dangerous. In many cases though, that view is from the outside. If you ask the people that live in the area, you might find there is actually a wonderful community spirit. Experiencing it could change opinions. We want to have a closer look at one area in South London where this is definitely the case. Roundshaw has an interesting history and a lot to love today. Then, if you need block management in Sutton, you can speak to us.

The development

Block management SuttonOriginally, Roundshaw was the site of the Croydon Airport. It began operating in 1920, and at one point was the only international airport in the UK. It was responsible for crucial innovations like air traffic control and passenger terminals, things we see at practically every airport around the world today.

However, the development of Heathrow meant the end for Croydon Airport. It would close in 1959. This left the council with a large piece of land to develop. The result was the Roundshaw estate. Work began in 1965 to create thousands of homes in high rise pre-cast concrete blocks as well as traditional brick homes. Residents began moving in two years later.

Problems and redevelopment

The estate is home to thousands of people. While it all started off well, the area sadly earned its reputation for being rough. Part of this was because of the design. Underground garages for cars and tight passageways unfortunately were the inspiration for anti-social behaviour.

By the 80s problems with the concrete properties were developing too. The issue was ASR, aka concrete cancer. A chemical reaction occurs because of alkaline cement paste, the silica in aggregates, and moisture. It causes swelling, leading to spalling (cracking and delamination). In the worst cases, it massively reduces the strength of concrete and can lead to structural failure.

Major repairs began in the mid 80s and 90s. Then a larger redevelopment scheme began in 2000, with partial demolition and regeneration. It was complete in 2010. Since then there has been massive improvements in the area. If you want block management in Sutton to help with properties, we can provide it.

The community

As we said above, the big thing here is the community spirit. It is completely at odds with Roundshaw’s reputation. Many people are happy to live here and enjoy seeing the same people every day. There is a real feel that most locals want to help each other. There are plenty of amenities too, including community hubs such as St Paul’s Church. These give people a regular chance to come together.

There are also plenty of community events in the area. This includes celebrations for Halloween and Bonfire Night. There are occasionally ones on Roundshaw Downs too, such as a parkrun each week. Even when there aren’t, the local nature reserve is great for walking, sitting in nature, and wildlife spotting.

Roundshaw is particularly popular with families. Locals say it still has a really traditional feel with children living on the same streets and playing together. There are some good schools too, but it may require a bus journey.
