Exploring some of North London’s most interesting pubs

People look for various things when they decide where they want to live. One factor that can be really important is how far it is to a local pub. Pubs are essential parts of the community in the UK, so it can be fantastic to live within walking distance of really good ones. What we want to do today is look at some pubs in North London with really interesting names. Then, if you have assets and want block management in Islington or other services, we can help.

Island Queen

Starting off in Islington, we have the Island Queen. You can find it in a great location on Noel Road, not far from Regent’s Canal. It has a great design, feeling like an old gin bar. With wooden panelling, high ceilings, and quirky details, there is plenty to love.

The most interesting thing here is the name. It is said to be the only pub in the UK called Island Queen. It comes from 1800s steamboats in the US that would travel along rivers in Mississippi and Ohio.

Spaniards Inn

Block management IslingtonNext we head over to Hampstead to the Spaniards Inn. It is a historic building with a Grade II listing, dating back to 1585. Originally it was a tollgate on Spaniards Road.

The pub is a landmark, with a stunning interior, wonderful garden, and plenty of stories to tell. It gets a mention in Dickens’ book The Pickwick Papers. It is also said to be one of London’s most haunted pubs. The name derives from the street and the influential Spanish Ambassador to James I.

The Wrestlers

Back in Islington but this time in Highgate, we have The Wrestlers. The historic pub on North Road dates back to 1547 and still has a number of original features. This is a great area, perfect for investing. If you do and then want block management in Islington, come to us.

The name of the pub is said to take inspiration from the fact people would meet here to settle differences. That probably wouldn’t fly today, but it is a great piece of history.

Bald Faced Stag

If you visit High Road in East Finchley, you can find the Bald Faced Stag. The pub dates back to the 1700s and was previously The Jolly Blacksmiths. It had the name change in 1781. It is instantly recognisable today because of the statue on the roof.

The pub is said to have once been the meeting point for hunts in the local area. This is only part of where the name comes from though. It is also said to take inspiration from a white faced stag that had been sighted on Finchley Common.

The Faltering Fullback

Finally, we have a beautiful Irish pub on leafy Perth Road, Finsbury Park. Originally the Sir Walter Scott, the 19th century pub got its current name in 1994. It has a wonderful interior, full of charm, character, and quirky decor. There is live music too.

The name takes inspiration from rugby. Fittingly, the pub is one of the best places in London to watch matches. It has a room named the Sin Bin specifically so people can get into the games.
