East Sheen FC
East Sheen is one of the most desirable suburbs in South-west London. It’s a lovely, green, affluent area. Most importantly, it has great schools, an abundance of green space, and some amenities. Additionally, the vibrant high street and nearby Mortlake station are huge selling points.
Forming in 1873, East Sheen Football Club has an incredible history. It began life playing rugby union rules football, before transitioning to association football in 1882. The club had some impressive early success, including a cup final in 1883 and a victory two years later (Surrey Senior Cup). The club had appearances in the FA Cup (1887) and London Senior Cup (1899). Amazingly, they also toured Europe, including playing in the predecessor to the European Cup in 1905.
East Sheen FC was a proper local club. They had matches in various areas over the years, including at Sheen Common and Mortlake. Notoriously, the club’s home from 1900 to 1905 was St Margaret’s. It was derided for lacking facilities. Speak to us about estate management in Richmond upon Thames and other services.
Dissolution and return
Sadly, East Sheen FC was plagued by problems for years. They had trouble drawing crowds, likely because of the lack of facilities. At the start of the 20th century it was also becoming harder to attract players. Significantly, this was a period when the area itself was changing massively, making it even harder for the club. There was expansion towards the end of the Victorian period, then a big building boom in the Edwardian era.
With the loss of their stadium and all the difficulties, East Sheen FC was dissolved in 1906. It was on the FA defunct list for almost 120 years. Incredibly though, it is back now. It plans to enter the Sunday league season in August. Crucially, the idea is so have two men’s teams, a women’s team, and youth teams.
It will be amazing to see the new chapter of East Sheen FC’s story. Crucially, the new owners have great ideas to celebrate the history and identity of the club. At the same time, they want it to become a key part of the community. The ethos is to help people develop on and off the pitch too.
