The list of iconic British people is very long, including legendary names from politics, music, film, fiction, and more. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle definitely deserves a place on that list for creating the iconic Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and Professor Moriarty characters. Sadly though, we could be at risk of losing a key piece of Doyle’s history with plans to redevelop one of his former homes in London. Let’s have a closer look, then you can speak to us if you need help with guaranteed rent and property management in Croydon.
A piece of history
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has a really interesting history. Born in Edinburgh in 1859, he spent time at schools in England and Austria, studied medicine in Edinburgh, became a ships’ doctor/surgeon, and practised medicine in Plymouth and Portsmouth. His early literary work was written while he was studying, but it was 1886’s A Study in Scarlet, the first Holmes and Watson story, that took off. He ultimately gave up medicine to focus on writing and became prolific, producing over 200 works.
From 1891 to 1894 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s home was 12 Tennison Road South Norwood, Croydon. He moved into the property with his first wife Louisa and young daughter Mary Louise, welcoming his son Kinglsey in 1892. Notably, during this time he wrote 20 stories, including the controversial The Final Problem (1893) where Holmes dies.
The Victorian property in Croydon is a big piece of literary history. It bears a blue plaque to celebrate this. However, it is facing an uncertain future. Speak to us about property management in Croydon, guaranteed rent, HMOs, and more.
Plans
Developer Walker Properties Ltd is planning to redevelop 12 and 14 Tennison Road. The plan is to create 12 flats, replacing the current HMOs. The project would also create access to land at the rear of the properties. Here the developer wants to build a new block with 12 more flats.
The proposals have been controversial for a number of reasons, attracting 23 objections. There are concerns about the damage to the Victorian properties and loss of heritage. All 24 flats would be for market sale too, so the plans were criticised for the lack of affordable housing. In addition, critics say the project is an overdevelopment for the site. Plus, there are concerns about the impact on parking in the area.
Crucially, in mid June Croydon Council made the decision not to give planning permission. There was an argument that the additional housing would be good for the area. However, issues with the design, lack of affordable homes, and impact on the heritage property were more significant. Sadly, an appeal is likely though, so there is still a risk.
