Controversy

The reveal of the proposals generated quite a backlash. Since then there have been a number of stakeholders voicing their opposition. Most recently, Cllr Ben Suter issued a formal objection. The main criticism is the loss of Green Belt land. Additionally, there are concerns about the impact of building a new community in the area without significant investments in infrastructure.

Interestingly, this is another project where there are arguments about the status of the site. Critics say it is Green Belt and should therefore be protected. However, the developer argues it is Grey Belt and should be open for redevelopment.

There are also arguments that the project would improve the quality of the green space on the site. In total the golf course is nearly 23 hectares. However, the majority is “monocultural” grassland. The development could increase diversity, retain as many mature trees as possible, improve blue space, and provide rewilding. Ultimately, it could provide impressive biodiversity net gain.
