Birmingham hotel providing accommodation for 40 homeless families

In response to a growing housing crisis in Newham, the local council is currently paying for around forty families to live at a hotel in Birmingham.

Over the past few years, Newham has seen the highest rise in homeless families out of all the London boroughs. Between 2010 and 2012, the number of families declaring themselves homeless shot up from 72 to 381. This is a real problem, as not only are more people becoming homeless, but there is a rapidly decreasing supply of temporary housing in London to accommodate them.

A spokesman for Newham council stated that the borough is going through a “housing crisis” due to housing benefit cuts and that they are “under tremendous pressure”, with limited resources to help those who have lost their homes.
