Prestigious awards for housing estates

In June the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) revealed its national award winners for 2017. These buildings are deemed to be the best in Britain and earned one of the most prestigious awards in the architecture field.

The most surprising thing about this year’s awards was that two of the forty-nine were given to housing estates. This is very rare and shows how attitudes towards how estates are designed and built are changing.

One of the winners was Dujardin Mews in Ponders End, Enfield. This project was the first social housing to be built in the Borough with direct participation of the local council in an incredible 40 years. The project was praised for the quality of the homes, focus on sustainability, and how they have helped to create a community.

The second project to receive an award was the Silchester Estate in Kensington. Again the local council was involved in the work, working closely with architects Haworth Tompkins and developer Peabody. The homes have a fantastic dual aspect, making them light, airy, and comfortable. In total there are 112 homes. Some were built for private sale whilst others are for social rent and shared ownership. There is no differentiation between these though, creating a diverse community.

Both projects are definitely deserving of praise because of the quality and the rareness. Other estates should be built with the same consideration and focus on great design.
