Taking steps to make London a greener city

Air quality and pollution have long been concerns for property buyers and residents in London, and there have been many schemes throughout the years aimed at reducing vehicular emissions, such as the congestion charge which was introduced in 2003. Now, Transport for London and the Greater London Authority are running a competition in which two London boroughs will be awarded £1 million funding to raise awareness of pollution in the city and take steps towards alleviating the issue, hopefully leading towards a greener, more eco-friendly capital.

Westminster city council is entering the competition with the aim of creating a new Low Emission Neighbourhood, centred around the Marylebone area. Part of the funding will be used to educate people on ways to cut emissions, create new green spaces, plant new trees, and install more charging points for electric cars, making it easier for people to choose more eco-friendly alternatives. The council will also employ new marshals who will travel around the borough and enforce the rule of drivers having to turn off their engines when their vehicles are stationary.

Whichever boroughs manage to secure the funding, living in an eco-friendly neighbourhood can be a hugely appealing factor for prospective property buyers and renters. If Westminster’s local authorities are successful in their competition bid, many more environmentally-conscious people are likely to want to live here, providing exciting new opportunities for landlords and investors.
