A historic shopping centre
Did you know that Brent Cross actually has a significant accolade? It was the first out of town shopping centre in the UK when it opened in 1976. Since then, centres like this have become incredibly popular while many high streets and town centres have had falling visitor numbers.
Brent Cross is actually something of an institution in North London. For decades it was very busy, full of shoppers and friends meeting up. Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, some will say it has lost its shine to an extent. That might not be the case for long though if plans for an upgrade go ahead.
Proposals
Brent Council first announced plans to redevelop Brent Cross in 2019. It was part of the biggest growth and regeneration proposal for the area, aiming to create a new town centre, a railway station, and more. This was significant at the time, causing a wave of interest in the area. If you have assets nearby and want to arrange guaranteed rent and estate management in Brent, speak to us.
The 2019 proposals were to give the shopping centre a £1.4bn upgrade, creating hundreds of new shops, dozens of new restaurants, a leisure and entertainment hub, and a new, larger bus station. Sadly the work on BX did not go ahead.
Crucially though, although the £1.4bn plans did not proceed, the idea did not go away. A new timeline was agreed, scheduling work on the shopping centre to take place later in the project. Now, we’re expecting a new version of the proposal to be finalised in Spring 2026. Notably, the expectation is it will include 150 new shops, 50 restaurants, a hotel, and a cinema.
In addition, while work on BX got pushed back, the plans for a railway station did not. Brent Cross West, a Thameslink station, opened in December 2023. It is a short bus trip or 20 minute walk from the shopping centre. Critically, it serves as a gateway to Brent Cross Town. Construction is underway here on a multi-billion pound project to create new homes, offices, and infrastructure.
