London has some of the most incredible landmarks and neighbourhoods in the world. You have a great opportunity to explore them later this month (13th – 21st) thanks to the Open House Festival. Every Borough and the City is taking part, with some buildings opening for rare tours and drop ins. If you’re thinking about property investment in Enfield or other parts of the capital, there are a number of inspiring buildings to look at.
Before the festival kicks off, let’s have a look at some of the must see landmarks in Enfield and one of the best neighbourhoods in the borough.
Churches
Like many parts of London, two of the most prominent landmarks in Enfield are churches. Because the city is actually a collection of hundreds of towns and villages, there is no shortage of religious buildings. Many of them have a wonderful history.
St Mary Magdalene in Windmill Hill is a lovely Gothic church from the late 19th century. It was built to serve the local area following the arrival of the railway and a wave of new homes. Today it is Grade II* listed because of the lovely design and elaborately ornate interior. Key features include the amazing original stained glass windows and original Victorian paintings.
There is an even older church in Enfield Town; St Andrew’s. It dates back to the 12th century, although there are later additions such as the 14th century tower. It also has a Grade II* listing because of the age and history. The best features include the organ case (from 1750) and original 17th century bells.
Modern excellence
Landmark properties don’t always have to be old and traditional. Newer builds can be just as wonderful. Alpha House in Winchmore Hill is a great example. The 1970s home has had extensive remodelling, making it a fantastic modern home. So, it should give you plenty of inspiration for property investment in Enfield.
Myddelton House and Gardens
This amazing home dates back to 1818. It has a great history and plenty of character. The gardens are the highlight though, dating back to when the property was the home of botanist E.A. Bowles. The eight acres are home to an incredible selection of plants and flowers. The gardens were restored to the original design from 2009 to 2011.
A leafy neighbourhood
Finally, we have Southgate, the perfect example of a suburban town. Much of the development is from the 1930s. However, there are also a number of significant older buildings to celebrate the area’s past. Many of them are in the Southgate Green Conservation Area. It’s an incredibly popular area for families thanks to the green space and number of good schools. The Open House Festival is offering a tour of the neighbourhood to examine how it took shape and the important focus on health and nature.
