Two moves to make Southwark a better place

Everybody wants to live in areas where they feel comfortable and safe. It is also fantastic if you have a say in local decision making. Southwark Council is doing a number of things to give locals more power and make the borough a welcoming place for everyone. We want to look at two of them here. Then, if you want help with property management in Southwark, you can rely on us.

Neighbourhoods model

Property management SouthwarkFirstly, Southwark is moving to a neighbourhood model rather than a wards model. It will give people the chance to decide what happens in their neighbourhoods, providing bigger benefits for communities. Crucially, the move will bring people together, provide more support for local conservation, and ensure the council is more responsive to local needs.

The decision comes after careful consideration of how people experience local life. Very few think about their local ward beyond what it means when it is time to vote. Instead, the majority look at their neighbourhood. So, the neighbourhoods approach could really improve different areas in the borough.

Interestingly, the new model splits Southwark into ten neighbourhoods. They reflect where people live and the communities in each area. Every neighbourhood has a councillor to work as a Champion for the area. Crucially, from September residents and community groups will be able to apply for funding for different projects.

In addition, work is underway to create a Neighbourhood Community Plan for each area; locals will have a say in future improvements for their areas. If you invest in properties in any part of the borough, you can rely on us for things like property management in Southwark.

Tackling anti-social behaviour

The second interesting move is Southwark Council is looking at introducing a Public Spaces Protection Order. PSPOs are tools local authorities can use to tackle antisocial behaviour. Their ultimate aim is to improve the quality of life for locals and visitors, as well as people that work in the borough.

Southwark Council said they’ve had numerous reports and feedback from locals about various issues in public spaces. This includes street drinking, out of control dogs, and loud music. Things like this can lead to antisocial behaviour and make areas feel unsafe. So, they want to explore the option of a PSPO to introduce new rules for public spaces.

The Council is asking local residents, businesses, and visitors to complete a survey to share their thoughts. The feedback will then help to determine whether they proceed with a PSPO and what kind of rules they could introduce. Ultimately, they want it to be the right move for the borough, ensuring people feel safe and respected.
