Great news for wildlife fans in Greenwich

London isn’t somewhere you would typically think about as a good place to see wildlife. However, it will surprise you. There are parks, nature reserves, wetlands, and other great spots across the city. Over the years, people have also seen seals, dolphins, sharks, and even whales in the Thames. If you’re passionate about wildlife, you’ll be happy with the news about a major South London Park. Let’s have a look, then you can reach out to us if you want some help with property investment in Greenwich and other areas.

Greenwich Park

Did you know that Greenwich Park became a hunting ground at the request of King Henry VIII in the 16th century? He was a passionate hunter, enjoying the sport and social side. It was also a fantastic way for him to showcase his prowess and status.

One of the King’s biggest passions was hunting deer. So, when Greenwich Park became a hunting ground, a small collection of them were kept here. Today, it has the title as the oldest deer park in the city.

Upgrades

Property investment GreenwichIn 2021, a four year project began to upgrade Greenwich Park. The £12m investment has some wonderful goals, including restoring landscape features, improving accessibility, and boosting biodiversity. There was also work to create new facilities, including a learning centre and cafe. The former is a really interesting example of property investment in Greenwich, creating more learning opportunities for children and community groups.

Sadly, the decision was made to relocate the deer from Greenwich Park while the upgrades were taking place. The aim was to ensure the work, particularly noisy construction, did not have a negative impact on them. As a result, they got a new home at Richmond Park.

Last month, with much of the construction work complete, we got the chance to see the reintroduction of deer to Greenwich Park. A small herd of eight fallow deer now call the park home. They have a new, larger paddock and access to the extensive woodland.

Visitors hoping to see the deer will have to be patient though. At the time of the reintroduction, park rangers said it would take a little time for the new arrivals to settle in. Sightings will be rare at first, but we can expect to see them more later in the year as they get comfortable.
